When you do digital stuff do you put your reference in a layer under your painting and paint over it ?
Here's what I do: I open the photo in a separate document, and I make a layer over the photo and do a quick line drawing (maybe 30 seconds) just to get the likeness. Then I cut and paste that line drawing into a new document, make it larger, and start painting. I basically don't reference the photo after that. It's sort of "cheating", I guess, but I find it really helps me.
